I wonder if it is alright for us to distance ourselves from the writings and materials produced by slave owners and/or slave traders of yesteryear. I say this not as a cancel culture disciple but as someone who believes or at least wants to believe that there are better alternatives in history we can use and rely on for our theological formation.
Example: I would take a Wesley over an Edwards any day of the week.
And, a question surrounding this topic is why the church, the white evangelical church, to be specific, so hostile toward the pious act of reparation? Could it be that the initial disease that caused race based slavery then is the same that causes a lack of empathy today?
